Democracy brought much hope and enthusiasm to citizenship for the conquest of new rights and freedoms. At the same time, but for a whole generation of young people it began a period of disconnection, stigmatisation and, unfortunately, in many cases, death by overdose or AIDS. The impact on the collective imagination -and drug policies surrounding- it is a phenomenon to which attention should be paid to avoid repeating errors in current regulatory processes.
